The Heinkel He 162 A-2 Salamander was one of the most unusual aircraft of World War II. Within a very short time towards the end of 1944 a fighter/interceptor that was quick and easy to make was built. Due to the air superiority of the Allies the whole of production was ultimately carried out underground. From February to April 1945, 116 machines were built, most of which were delivered to Fighter Squadron 1 "Oesau" at Leck, Schleswig-Holstein. More extensive use of the He 162 was prevented by the notorious fuel shortages in the final days of the war. The last He 162 mission took place on 4th May 1945.
